Description
Gastric Plication
We perform the Gastric Plication as a laparoscopic procedure. Laparoscopic Gastric Plication, involves sewing one or more large folds in your stomach. During the Laparoscopic Gastric Plication the stomach volume is reduced about 70% which makes the stomach able to hold less and may help you eat less.
Click on the 1st video above to see and hear Dr. Schauer describe the procedure.

Sleeve Gastrectomy
We perform the Sleeve Gastrectomy as a laparoscopic procedure. This involves making five or six small incisions in the abdomen and performing the procedure using a video camera (laparoscope) and long instruments that are placed through these small incisions .

Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass surgery is an operation that creates a small pouch to restrict food intake and bypasses a segment of the small intestine.

Laparoscopic Gastric Banding
During the procedure, surgeons typically use laparoscopic techniques and instruments to implant an inflatable silicone band around the upper portion of the stomach. The band creates a new, tiny pouch that limits and controls the amount of food consumed.

Is Bariatric Surgery Right for Me?
Typical candidates for a bariatric surgery procedure, including gastric bypass surgery and adjustable gastric banding, are people who remain severely obese after conventional approaches to weight loss such as diet and exercise, or who have an obesity-related disease. For other patients, however, greater efforts toward weight control, such as changing eating habits, behavior modification and increasing physical activity, may be more appropriate.
To be eligible for a bariatric surgery procedure, you must be morbidly obese (weighing at least 100 pounds over your ideal body weight and having a BMI of at least 40). You may also qualify for the procedure with a BMI of 35 to 40 if other serious illnesses, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or sleep apnea, are present.

Quality counts when referring patients to hospitals and physicians, so Cleveland Clinic has created a series of Outcomes books similar to this one for many of its institutes. Designed for a healthcare provider audience, the Outcomes books contain a summary of our surgical and medical trends and approaches, data on patient volume and outcomes, and a review of new technologies and innovations.
